A NEW CHURCH IN DENVER
We are forming a new community of people in Denver that proclaims the good news of Jesus, upholds the historic Christian faith, and seeks the renewal of the city through the love and grace of God. By planting Fellow Citizens Church in the heart of urban Denver, we have an opportunity to create a central gathering of public faith that heralds the gospel throughout the whole city.
Fellow Citizens Church prioritizes the following core values:
THE GOSPEL
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the solution to the core problem of spiritual emptiness many experience in Denver by reconciling people to God and securing their future in his Kingdom.
Jesus Christ is Lord and King and is ushering in his Kingdom, restoring what has been broken and lost from the fall. His death atones for all our sin and his resurrection is the firstfruits of the redemption of our bodies, and eventually the whole world. His gospel holds the power to redeem and restore the broken and lost parts of Denver.
It is a message of peace, drawing people together to be fellow citizens with the Saints and members of the household of God (Eph 2:19).
GATHERING
The church is the solution to the isolating individualism of Denver by inviting people into meaningful relationships and a rooted community in the family of God
Discipleship to Jesus means we belong to God and we belong to the family of God, the people of the new kingdom. Gathering together on the Lord’s Day shapes us into the community of faith, tuning our hearts to worship the King and submit our lives to him.
We are a community aligned with the greater story of the gospel, the highlight of which is the invitation into the presence of the resurrected Jesus at the Lord’s Table.
PUBLIC FAITH
We believe that church is meant for the public sphere. Sunday services are invitations for the city to come together and hear the proclamation of the gospel. Church gatherings are public declarations of the Lordship of Christ.
Members are encouraged and equipped to engage their work, social networks, places of influence and neighborhoods as a comitted follower of Jesus.
THE FAMILY OF GOD
Denverites mostly prioritize independence and personal freedom at the expense of having deep and consistent connections to friends, family, and neighbors. The result is often isolation and loneliness.
However, since we have been welcomed into the household of God, we want to open up our homes to extend radical hospitality to one another and walk through life together in encouraging relationships. We are brought together, not on the basis of ancestry, DNA, or common interests, but on the shared blood of Jesus Christ.
As brothers and sisters in God’s household, we are a community that is rooted, committed, merciful, diverse, generous, hospitable, welcoming, lamenting, and rejoicing.
THE CITY
Fellow Citizens Church is a church in the city and for the city of Denver. Institutional leaders are doubling down and committing to the urban core of Denver and it's future development, and so are we! The city is growing at a rapid pace, and we need churches to meet this growth by building new communities that follow Jesus and love the city.
When citizens of a city let Jesus inform their public life, the whole city is blessed and experiences greater flourishing. Renewal happens when churches see beyond an introverted concern for themselves and begin to participate in cultural engagement, acts of service to vulnerable population groups, and investment in the common good of the city.
We are relentlessly optimistic about how a Holy Spirit empowered church in Denver can bring restoration, healing, and hope in Denver.
FORMATION
Following Jesus in Denver takes resilience and courage to resist the forces of secularism and false ideology. We grow as disciples through transformative communion with God.
We access God’s life-giving presence by rehearsing the story of the gospel in the sacraments, worship, prayer, Scripture, fasting, and sabbath.
ORDINARY MIRACULOUS
As a church, we love ordinary faithfulness in everyday life. God blesses our simple and humble acts of obedience and devotion.
At the same time, God’s Spirit has been poured out on the church for mighty acts of power. We will pray and expect the Holy Spirit to move supernaturally through us in Denver to glorify God and extend his Kingdom.
ANCIENT MODERN
We believe there is power in a church that is rooted in the depth, mystery, and continuity of the historic church while making it accessible and highly invitational to unchurched people in Denver.
We look to the past while closely observing the present. The result is building a fresh movement that translates the historic Christian faith to our modern culture.
